The Typical Weed Control Schedule for Warm-Season & Cool-Season Grasses

At TurfXpert, we have years of expertise that have taught us the best ways to care for the common types of grasses we have in our area of Georgia. That includes zoysia, Bermuda, and fescue. While fescue is a cool-season grass, it can still flourish here but we are right on the line for being able to have fescue lawns--any farther south, and it would not survive well. We also have warm-season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia. Both types of grasses can be susceptible to weed invasions and we have created a weed control schedule for them:

  • Round 1, in March-April, is a pre-emergent treatment to target broadleaf weeds before they go.
  • Round 2, also in March-April, may be another pre-emergent treatment or post-emergent spot treatments if we see any weed growth.
  • Round 3, in April-June, is a post-emergent spot treatment for weeds.
  • Round 4, in June-August, and Round 5, in August-October, are both post-emergent spot treatments again.
  • Round 6 in October-November is only administered to warm-season grasses. This is the final post-emergent spot treatment of the year.

Common Weeds in North Georgia

Dandelion weeds growing in a Roswell, GA lawn.

We have several common weeds in north Georgia that will grow in your lawn if you do not have routine treatments to control their presence. When you let weeds grow unchecked, they can end up taking over your lawn and steal precious nutrients and resources from your grass. Some of these weeds include:

  • Dandelions
  • Crabgrass
  • Clover
  • Poa annua
  • And more

Do not let these weeds defeat your grass. Instead, enroll in routine weed control treatments to prevent their growth. Never try to pull weeds, either, as this is an ineffective method and will leave you with more work later.
